Why I Believe in Chiropractic Care for Children

A high school cheerleader came to me with persistent back pain, but her family had no idea what was causing it. They only knew that she struggled with the pain during practice. It was beginning to affect her performance—even her self-confidence. Her case is one of countless reasons I believe chiropractic care for children should be high on the list for parents seeking healthcare solutions.

Discovering the Cause Behind the Pain

In my young patient’s case, her pain stemmed from scoliosis, a curvature of the spine that places stress at its fulcrum—the peak of the curve. Scoliosis poses a real challenge for someone in a physically demanding sport like cheerleading, which depends on balance, strength, and flexibility. Certain moves or positions become difficult, if not impossible, causing a cycle of frustration.

My patient was a “catcher” on her team, the person who catches others during stunts. The role requires a strong core. However, in her case, the curve in her spine meant that no matter how strong her muscles were, they couldn’t fully support the imbalance caused by scoliosis.

Without knowing about her condition, she was doing the wrong exercises for her body’s specific needs, which only made the problem worse.

Customizing Care for Lasting Relief

The key to her recovery lay in recognizing and adapting, not simply trying to push through the pain. By diagnosing her spinal curvature, we could focus on exercises and adjustments to relieve her discomfort. I recommended changes to her routines, including modifying her role and working to strengthen her body to support, rather than strain, her spine.

This tailored approach made all the difference. She found relief from her pain and returned to cheerleading. Patients like her are why I advocate for early, specific interventions for young athletes—especially when conventional treatments might overlook or misdiagnose what’s happening.

Pediatric Education for Chiropractors

Extensive training and experience support pediatric chiropractic care. As an associate professor at Palmer College of Chiropractic West, I helped establish courses specifically addressing children’s health. These programs give chiropractors the tools needed to help young patients safely and effectively.

Research About Chiropractic Care For Kids

One of the biggest questions I hear from parents is, “Is chiropractic care safe for kids?”

The answer is “yes.” Chiropractic care for kids is gentle, individualized, and always age-appropriate. It often addresses spinal alignment issues, posture, and birth or sports injuries discomfort while avoiding medication and invasive procedures.

A 2019 review by Safer Care Victoria in Australia surveyed over 19,000 parents and found that 87% saw significant improvements in their children’s health after chiropractic care. This evidence aligns with what I see daily: kids leaving the office moving better, feeling better, and living healthier.

Why Early Chiropractic Care Matters

One of the lessons from this cheerleader’s journey is the importance of detecting conditions like scoliosis early. Many medical professionals don’t screen for scoliosis until a child shows obvious signs, but in chiropractic care, we often begin screening for this condition as early as age six. This early intervention can mean the difference between a young athlete facing ongoing issues or getting the tailored care they need to continue doing what they love.

Chiropractic care focuses on understanding the root cause of pain, not just treating symptoms. When we identify scoliosis or other alignment issues early on, we can adapt exercises, stretches, and routines to prevent further injury and pain. We also help optimize a child’s body to perform at its best, whether that means adjusting their role in a sport or supporting them in other activities.

Chiropractic care for children extends beyond bones and joints. It’s a Whole Being approach that examines how physical challenges impact a child’s mental and emotional health.

What You Can Do if Your Child is in Pain

If your child struggles with unexplained pain, especially in sports or other activities, consider chiropractic care as a proactive solution. By addressing underlying causes, like spinal misalignment, you can help them find relief and build a stronger, healthier foundation for future success.

How to Find the Right Chiropractor for Your Child

The young cheerleader’s story is just one example of how chiropractic care can transform a child’s health and confidence. However, not every chiropractor specializes in pediatric care. The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) is a helpful resource for more information.
